I absolutely LOVE chocolate, and basically anything that falls under the dessert category... but I don't believe dessert should be a junk food. All the food I eat is prepared with a priority on providing my body with nutrition, without compromising on the taste. I am very sensitive to blood sugar spikes and crashes when it comes to consuming high glycemic sugars, so when making any dessert foods for myself, I use absolutely no added sugars or high glycemic foods. You'll find some recipes here that I have created mostly for loved ones, that include sweeteners like maple/ coconut sugar, raw honey, or dates; all of which are all full of nutrients- but when I try and incorporate them into my diet (yes, even medjool dates!) I find myself needing a nap in the afternoon (read: blood sugar crash, and totally not worth it).
Most of my go-to dessert recipes like any of the chocolates, the coconut butter swirl sweet potato brownies, and my favourite carob gingerbread cookies are completely free of any added high-glycemic or refined sweeteners. I often rely on the natural sweetness of sweet potato or coconut butter to get that dessert feel, but create foods so healthy that I genuinely consume them for breakfast. I don't believe we should reward ourselves with sugar, or any junk food for that matter.
If you personally have a sweet tooth and thrive on higher glycemic foods (many people do!) feel free to add some raw honey, or dates to the recipes that don't necessarily call for them (like the chocolate).
