Sour Cherry CBD Sleep Gummies
This epic recipe contains multiple natural sleeping aids, and is the perfect nighttime treat to help you fall into a deep slumber. The gummies contain tart cherry juice, magnesium powder, gelatin, and CBD oil, and are sweetened only with Luo Han Guo (aka Mont Fruit) which is the sweetener already found in the Thorne magnesium powder used in the recipe (so no added sweetener).
This recipe is not only good for sleep, but also incredibly gut healing and powerfully anti-inflammatory! (Oh, and they taste awesome).
Gelatin is the amino acid rich substance extracted from (generally) cows (bones, tissues, joints) and gives the gummies their gelatinous texture. When warm, gelatin dissolves, but when it cools it becomes jelly (like jell-o!). Gelatin powder is tasteless and colourless, and has profound benefits including:
Improving skin health. Collagen is what gives skin its healthy and youthful appearance.
Source of protein
Aiding digestive function
Easing joint pain
Helping control blood sugar
Maintaining healthy bones
Improving sleep quality
Aiding weight loss
Note: collagen will not work in this recipe; only gelatin firms up as it cools. To learn more about collagen VS. gelatin, click the button below:
Tart Cherry Juice
Tart cherries (aka sour, dwarf or Montmorency cherries) are rich in nutrients, and have been found to:
decrease recovery time from exercise
promote brain health
strengthen the immune system
reduce blood pressure
promote weight loss
and *drum roll* are a powerful sleeping aid.
Tart cherries are naturally high in melatonin, and a plethora of studies demonstrated not only that they help people get to sleep, but actually also get a deeper sleep!
Note: Only tart cherry has these benefits (not regular cherry), but you can use any juice of your preference for the recipe.
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions in your body and so ensuring your consuming adequate magnesium daily will help essentially every possible aspect of your health (from energy creation, protein formation, gene maintenance, muscle movements, and nervous system regulation). The problem is magnesium has been heavily depleted from the soils, and so it is hard to get enough from food source alone. Mag bisglycinate is one of the most bio-available forms and the Thorne product is one of the best mag’s I’ve come across.
Luo Han Guo (aka Monk Fruit)
Powerful anti-oxidant and natural sweetener, Luo Han Guo has so many nutritional benefits it’s almost unbelievable. Reduces inflammation, fights cancer, boosts longevity, protects against heart disease. Luo Han Guo has been used to treat many ailments in Eastern Medicine ranging from acute/ chronic inflammation, chronic cough, constipation, and even diabetes.
This ingredients is already found in the magnesium powder (by Thorne) that I use.
CBD Oil (or CBD Shatter)
Natural compounds called cannabinoids found in the hemp plant such as CBD and CBDa stimulate the body’s endocannabinoid system, a complex network of cannabis-like chemicals and receptors that regulates activity such as sleep, appetite, pain and mood.
When we are feeling out of balance, the hemp plant works synergistically with our biochemistry to bring a sense of holism thanks to the optimal levels of cannabinoids, terpenes, essential fatty acids and nutrients that help to support a sustainable, healthy lifestyle.
Sour Cherry CBD Sleep Gummies
1 cup of organic tart cherry juice
2 tbsp of grass-fed gelatin powder
3 scoops of Thorne’s magnesium bisglycinate powder (which contains Luo Han Guo)
Endoca CBD oil (quantity depends on how potent you want to make your gummies)
Bring the cherry juice to a low simmer on the stove and then whisk in your gelatin, magnesium
Take the juice mixture off the heat and get it into your silicone moulds quickly- because as the gelatin cools it will begin to solidify. I use THESE heart shape moulds.
Add in your CBD drops into the moulds individually so you control exactly how much goes in; quantity will totally depend on the strength of your CBD and how strong you want each gummy to be. I personally used Endoca 15% CBD and put 3 drops per gummy.
Refrigerate for 1-2 hours before popping the gummies out, to make sure the gelatin is properly set. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks!
This step is optional, but I like to play deep-sleep inducing music while I make the gummies to infuse them with relaxing vibrations. The 432 Hz frequency is said to open the heart chakra, and unites you with the universal harmony of the planet. (See video)
You could use THC in this recipe and incorporate it accordingly like you did the CBD.
If you decide to use CBD shatter instead of oil, add it in once you’ve removed the juice from the heat, and whisk it in well to incorporate it evenly before putting it into each mould. (Sprinkling it in each individual cup will not work, the shatter will just float.)
If these are for kids or you have a sweet tooth; you could also add some honey; I would opt for medicinal Manuka honey. Studies show the sleeping-aid benefits of honey + salt, so if you’re adding honey, go for 1-2 tbsp and a good shake of sea salt, added in during step 1 along with the juice and magnesium.
If you’re using a different magnesium, you can add the luo han guo seperately (look for “Monk Fruit Extract” in the shops or buy online HERE).
If you don’t want to use CBD oil or are ambivalent using it for children, try some “Sleep Juice” (see image below) a herbal supplement that contains valerian root, hops, skullcap, lemon balm, passionflower, and california poppy.
